10 Things To Know About Dating A Web Designer

Date of Update: 09-28-2016

1. We see things differently.

Web designers tend to look at the world through a creative lens. Often times, we seem to be gazing into nothingness, when in fact, we are looking at the side of a building, a billboard, or a car. We take in design and function in just about everything we see. We get inspiration from everywhere and are usually making mental and physical notes for our next website project.

2. Watching t.v. or movies becomes an interactive activity.

When you date a web designer, you should expect them to stop in the middle of a television show or movie to discuss the color or design of some random thing they saw on screen. This is probably frustrating for other people, but as web designers were are keenly aware of how color, form, and function come together on screen. We notice tiny details that seem to sail past everyone else. We will notice when the color of someone’s shirt is slightly different from one shot in a scene to the next. And we’ll probably want to discuss it at length, or at the very least mention it in passing.

3. We are either criticizing or praising every website we use.

We love great websites. We don’t have any issues praising a site we are using because the user experience is wonderful. On the other side of the coin, we have no problem griping about bad web experiences. When we come across a site that causes us any kind of grief, we are the first to speak up.

4. We design our living spaces as meticulously as we design our sites.

Web designers see their living spaces as an extension of their web creativity. We are very meticulous about the colors and styles of the pieces we choose for our homes. Everything needs to work together to have a consistent look and feel. We often follow the same rules in our interior design as we do for web design.

5. We never stop working.

So you have a 9-5 workday, huh? Chances are, if you are dating a web designer, they don’t. Sure, we may clock in and clock out at normal work day hours like everyone else, but our brains are always working. We are always searching for our next design inspiration. And we rarely stop thinking about the projects we need to complete. It’s not unusual to see us sitting up at 2am in front of a brightly lit computer screen. Don’t fight it, just let us work our magic when the mood strikes us.

6. We are nerds.

Yup, we will swoon over the new iPhone model and we love our cult classics. We spend an inordinate amount of time focused on how the new icons or desktop looks on the latest system update. And don’t expect some boring keyboard and mouse. We like to spend extra money for the mouse and keyboard set simply because they’ve got a cool design and they match.

7. We are passionate about the tools we work with.

Web designers usually select a set of tools to work with when they start. And getting them to switch is very difficult. We are intensely loyal to the programs and tools we use. So if you are sharing a computer with a web designer, be prepared to have all kinds of programs and tools installed that you will not only never use, but you’ll probably never fully understand.

8. We are difficult to shop for.

Because we are so picky about color, form and function, it can be quite difficult to buy gifts for us. A good alternative to an actual gift is giving us a good gift card and offering to go shopping with us. For us shopping is another way for us to explore our creative outlet and having you with us to discuss all the inspiration we see is just a bonus! We are usually very appreciative of the thought, so at least there’s that.

9. We buy the best gifts for other people.

We are very detail oriented. We notice things other people tend to gloss over. So we did notice you getting excited about that new PS4 console the last time we were out. And we also noticed how you were inspecting those new pair of tennis shoes. You’ll probably be getting one (or both) of those items on the next special occasion.

10. We love IKEA.

IKEA is like design heaven! The website is awesome, but going into the store is even better! If you’re dating a web designer, chances are they have IKEA furniture and accessories all over the place. Get used to putting that furniture together, because when they pop in for a browse session at the local IKEA store, they’ll, most likely, be coming home with at least one new piece.
