10 Ways Your Website Is Driving Customers Away

Date of Update: 01-26-2017

Ever since the very first website was created, site traffic has been an important issue. The reason, obviously, is the more site traffic you can generate, the more online exposure you will get.

10 Reasons Your Website Is Driving Customers Away

With that in mind, if you haven’t been getting the amount of web traffic you expect, you may be feeling worried and confused. However, don’t throw your site down the trash chute just yet. There could be some obvious (and completely fixable) reasons your web traffic isn’t up to snuff.

Slow Load Speeds
If the load time for your site’s landing pages are more than 4 seconds, you’re going to lose those visitors. The ideal is two seconds or less.

Scrolling/Popup Advertisements
These are adverts that pop up in the middle of the screen in which the user has to dig for the tiny close button. An overwhelming amount of visitors will simply move onto another site rather than spend time searching for the inconspicuous close button.

Badly Written Content
Grammar and spelling are still important. If your site is filled with grammatical and spelling errors, you will be seen as untrustworthy. When people land on a webpage that is wrought with spelling and grammatical errors, they will simply go away.

Old Content
Out of date content can be worse than no content at all. When users visit your site and see the most recent posts are from 4 years ago, they are probably going to assume your business is no longer active or you are out of date.

Ugly Landing Pages
A website with a bad color palette, irrelevant images, or a disorganized layout makes a statement to your visitors that you don’t care about the image your business portrays.

Too Many Images
Don’t overwhelm your visitors with so many images that your content or call to action doesn’t stand out. When choosing images for your site, ensure they are relevant and that you have still reserved enough white space to make your site pleasing to the eye.

No Call To Action
If you don’t have a Call to Action or it’s hidden someplace on the landing page, your visitors aren’t going to go searching around for what they need. Make it obvious where they should go next and what they should do.

Site is Not Responsive
You’re probably tired of hearing me talk about responsiveness. But you need to understand that customers aren’t going to spend much time on your site (if any) if your site isn’t optimally viewable via mobile devices.

Complicated Navigation
Navigation is one of the single most important items for your page. If your customers can not find what they are looking for within seconds, they will leave. And 90% of users will leave your site if they can’t find what they need within 2 – 3 clicks.

Auto-Playing Video or Music
Auto-playing media is more of a source of irritation than a useful tool. Your visitors are most likely at home watching television and don’t want website noise clogging up the atmosphere. Or, even worse, at work and don’t want media shouting at them in a quiet office environment (how embarrassing).

I’ve created a simple infographic below. Take a look now and keep it handy for later. This way you can always keep a watch on your site to ensure it isn’t falling into any of the pitfalls that could be driving your customers away from your site instead of driving them in droves to your site. And if you find your site is hitting on any of these areas, feel free to contact me. I can help you get back on track.
