Color Impressions
Date of Update: 01-12-2017
When it comes to color schemes on the web, many people simply choose what they like best. Sometimes they don’t know the colors they’ve chosen will reflect a specific feeling or emotion to their users. It is important to remember that colors often are used to invoke a specific effect. Seeing a logo or a website for the first time can leave an impression on us. And a large piece of that impression stems from color.
Additionally, people, in general, respond to different colors in different ways. By harnessing those emotions through color, you can take advantage of those subliminal responses.
For example, think of the Apple brand. They use grey and white in their color scheme. By using the color grey, Apple has subliminally placed a feeling of security and intelligence. While the white in their brand conveys a sense of clean design and easy function.
On the other hand, if you consider Mercedes-Benz, their main color scheme is built on black and silver (grey). When thinking of Mercedes, we often associate feelings of expensive or classy, and reliability. All of these examples are ways that color plays into a buyers mindset about your product.
The infographic shows several of the standard colors. It reviews the feelings associated with each color as well as common advertising venues they are used in. While there are many colors in the color wheel, and each of those has a feeling associated with it, this infographic shows a small sampling of the link between color and emotion.
So, the next time you are getting ready to redesign your website or logo, keep these feelings in mind when settling on a color palette. You just may be able to sway your users emotions simply based on the color scheme you choose.
